The High tops of the Cairngorms

Armchair browsing of books of the highlands will always tempt a person to put the Cairngorms in the second division, and views from Aviemore do little to alleviate this opinion. However, whenever I visit this high and expansive summits, I'm always sharply reminded that they are equal with the very best in the highlands, and that their sub-arctic landscape and caledonian glens make for a unique experience. This year we had a 2 day camp in upper Glen Derry at just under 2000 ft and after an evening walk up Beinn a' Chaorainn ( a connoisseurs munro..!!), we had a wonderful days walk over Beinn Mheadhoin (Vee'an apparently), Ben Macdui, and Derry Cairngorm. The walk had a good blend of path and pathless and a day of brooding skies and passing shafts of sunlight made for an unforgettable day. I saw an article on the web which summarised the feeling you get on these tops. This guy (Cameron) was standing on Breariach, and I think nicely summarises the feeling I had at the summit of Stob Coire Sputan Dearg, the extremely worthwhile south top of Ben Macdui. Midge Alert

As we relaxed with one of many cups of tea (boiled by the efficient but utterly unstable MSR Pocket Rocket) the wind fell and the midges attacked. Those with prior experience spoke of 'death by a thousand cuts', so we all put our midge protection headgear on. Hence the eccentric appearance.

Night of terrors, with an unexpected bonus?

This shows the view of the loo, immediately before going to bed.

Little did we know what awaited us. My night started at around 3am, when I awoke and decided that I had probably lost the keys for the hire car that we had left down the mountain. From that moment, sleep was out of the question. I thought about getting them out of the bag, but this was completely impossible without waking everyone up, so I cycled around the following thoughts about 10000 times;

1. If have lost they keys then...
2. we will miss our flight and not get back for an extra day so...
3. everyone will hate me but...
4. being civilised they will never actually say so...
5. I will eventually die a hermit...
6. loop to 1.

After about iteration 4997, Peter had a wrestling match with a giant nut.

After iteration 9999, at 5am, all of the serious rock climbers got up. Spotting my moment to check on the keys, I started to get up to. At this point, I either had a hallucination (which as Andy discovered, might be possible as a result of altitude sickness) or one of the female rock climbers bared all. I blinked, and the moment was over.

Having abseiled over the dozens of bags on the floor of the room, I took my bag outside, to discover the keys twinkling evilly at me.

Nice time for doing some photography though.

It's the stunning view from the Ventosa Refuge where we stayed a night during a 3 days trek through the Aiguestortes National Park, via the Circ de Colomers. Some rare video footage of titanic gentlmen in operation Our camp kitchen at Loch Maree was a marvel of comfort and engineering. A surprise evening second course of port, stilton and crackers was the highlight of the gastronomic delights. Mind you, I was pretty addicted to the hard sausage by the end of the trip. Merino twins striding forth. For some reason I find this clip a little disturbing... Refuelling in progress;

Planes, Boats and Automobiles

Titans travelled by land, air and water to complete this foray into the Scottish wilderness of Fisherfield Forest (May 2006). The prime objective was to ‘bag’ the ‘most remote’ Munro, generally considered to be A’Mhaighdean. After a hearty breakfast at the Loch Maree hotel, two small boats ferried the Titans and their camping gear across the loch to the north shore. Later that day, camp was struck at an idyllic spot on the south shore of the Fionn Loch. An afternoon/evening foray up Beinn Lair whetted the appetite for the main outing up A’Mhaighdean on the following day. Some Titans also added Ruadh Stac Mor to their personal tallies of the munros. After 48 hours in the wilderness, making the return crossing of the loch felt strange; the traditional Sunday lunch at the hotel was some consolation.

First scrambles in Snowdonia

The prototype Titanic trip in 2002 included the classics of Crib Goch (below), and Tryfan (north ridge). Looking at the Crib Goch pinnacles photo again (on the right) reminds me of something…. anyone else remember the ‘geroff yer puff’ incident?
